Santa adds sparkle to Newquay’s Lantern Parade

Events in Newquay: It will be the icing on Newquay’s Christmas cake when Santa and his cloven hoofed friends touch down in Newquay on Friday, November 25. They will enjoy some well-deserved timeout from their busy schedule and a breath or two of fresh Cornish air.

This much loved red-suited old gentleman and his fur-coated entourage will also join in the fun of Newquay’s Lantern Parade and the Switching-on of the town’s Christmas lights.

Once again children from Newquay schools – six this year – are busy creating individual lanterns which they will carry on the night. The parade will set off from Narrowcliff at 6.30pm. The children will be accompanied by The Mayor of Newquay, Town Councillors and members of other organisations within the town. The lanterns will light their way along Cliff Road until they reach the Hotel Victoria where Santa – on his sleigh pulled by real reindeer – will join the procession as it continues down East Street. The parade will stop at the bottom of Marcus Hill for the switching on of Newquay’s beautiful Christmas lights and a blessing of the town’s Christmas tree. As Christmas carols are sung to celebrate this wonderful community event, Santa and his reindeer will head off to spread seasonal cheer further afield.

The festive parade will then continue through Newquay – Bank Street to Fore Street – where the event culminates at 8pm with a fabulous fireworks display at Newquay Harbour, funded by Newquay Town Council.

Earlier in the afternoon – from 3pm – locals and visitors to Newquay can say hello to Santa’s four legged team outside Hotel Victoria which is where the reindeer will stay until 6pm – apart from a brief disappearance to have afternoon tea.

Throughout this enjoyable evening many shops will be opening their doors until 8.30pm with many celebrating Black Friday, so keep an eye out for bargains! Newquay’s shop windows will also be coming to life for Newquay BID’s Festive Shop Window Competition to help bring a little extra Christmas spirit to Newquay town’s centre.

Throughout the weekend (November 25, 26 and 27th) Newquay’s annual Music and Ale Festival will be taking place on Fore Street Car Park which is boasting some of Newquay and Cornwall’s best bands and the opportunity to enjoy lip-smacking ales and local produce.

This fun event, much anticipated by locals and visitors alike, is the start of a cracker of a festive festival organised by Newquay BID and Newquay Town Council, alongside Newquay Lions Club. The Festive Festival events programme can be picked up at lots of venues around town and Visit Newquay on Marcus Hill. Or, if more convenient, go to Newquay Festive Festival programme to view or download a copy. You can then see which activities best suit you, your friends and family.
