Events in Newquay: Matt Way, the man behind the Joe Way Paddle for Life, is delighted to announce the line-up for the FREE Sunset Sessions at Newquay Harbour on Thursday, June 22.
The Newquay Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach organised a “Joe Way Memorial Paddle” to raise funds for the Precious Lives Appeal to build a children’s hospice in Cornwall. This event was held in memory of Matt and Claire Way’s toddler, Joe, who bravely battled a number of life-threatening illnesses in his short life.
The paddle became an annual event which is very well supported not only by locals but visitors, too, and 2017 is its tenth anniversary.
More recently Sunset Sessions have been added to entertain the paddlers, their supporters and spectators and enhance this fun experience.
Matt Way said; “We are looking forward to the live music this year as the event keeps getting bigger, we are so grateful for the business support that we have and the bands all playing for free to entertain the town.”
Local band, Steel Appeal – a 10 piece Caribbean-style steel band – is back to get this family fun afternoon off on the right beat. Their laid-back music will set the mood for the rest of the celebrations. Steel Appeal’s set starts at 4pm.
The artist up first on the Sunset Sessions stage at the paddle is Newquay singer/songwriter and acoustic sensation, Daisy Clark. Daisy is currently enjoying national and global acclaim after six million hits on YouTube video rendition of Hopelessly Devoted to You. This iconic song will be performed in her set. Be prepared to be mesmerised with this very talented, young singer who is destined for great things. Daisy Clark starts singing at 5pm.
The Blues Brothers On The Run are hitting the Paddle for the first time, Lee Quinny has performed several times over the years for Joe’s Paddle, so get ready for these guys to explode into the crowd and get everyone going. They begin at 6pm.
The Ferris Wheel Junkies are a lively five-piece rock, pop and funk party band. Covering an eclectic range of retro and current tracks, they love putting a playful twist on old favourites. With male and female lead vocals adding versatility to their repertoire, Ferris Wheel Junkies are guaranteed to get any crowd up and dancing right from the start. This group’s performance will be in the Newquay Rowling Club from 8pm.
Matt continued “We are the only FREE music gig which is held in the harbour and the paddle is all about the community coming together, celebrating Joe’s story, raising money for over 20 great causes and showcasing the Newquay spirit. As a family we are very proud of how the town has made this event so special.”
The afternoon starts with the skydive onto Towan beach at 3.30pm and the last registration for a heat is 6pm so there is plenty of time to arrive when people have finished work, The Joe Way memorial RNLI lifeguard race is just after 7pm. Boards are provided with lots of help from Newquay and Lusty Glaze Surf Life Savers so all you need is your wetsuit. Swimmers, SUP’s and canoes are also welcome.
