The twelfth Joe Way Paddle for Life and its Sunset Sessions will be back on the beach at Newquay Harbour on Thursday, 20th June.
Local boy Joe was born with a rare genetic condition and died on the 7th May 2008 aged 4. He had been labelled a miracle boy after surviving meningitis, a potentially deadly skin reaction SJS, numerous superbugs but finally died of complete organ failure after suffering from Steven Johnson Syndrome for a second time.
Since his death his parents have campaigned tirelessly to raise money for over 20 causes in his name, raising more than £152K for over 20 charities.
The Paddle for Life – in partnership with Newquay Towan, Blystra Lions Club and Surf Life Saving Cornwall – raises money from the paddlers entry money, food stalls, drink sales at the rowing club and the prize draw raffle.
Matt Way, Joe’s dad, said; “We are looking forward to another great event and we are now looking for bands, big prizes for the draw and sponsors.”
Each year four sponsors at £500 each start the fundraising pot and have their logos on all the artwork and on the website.
Some of the highlights over the years have included Joe’s banner which has travelled around the world; two double-decker buses that were branded in the paddle colors; skydiving; last year’s paddle short film running before every movie at Newquay’s Lighthouse Cinema, supporting Children’s Hospice South West Little Harbour from the gifting of the land to the doors opening and 11 amazing Paddle for Life events as well as many other fundraisers in the first couple of years.
Matt won “Pride of Britain” regional winner for fundraising which has underpinned the importance of Newquay,s paddle in memory of Joe.
The paddling starts with the skydive onto Towan beach at 4pm and the last registration for a heat is 6pm so there is plenty of time to arrive when people have finished work, the Joe Way memorial RNLI lifeguard race is just after 7pm. Boards are provided with lots of help from Newquay and Lusty Glaze Surf Life Savers so all you need is your wetsuit!
